Designed by noted architect William Strickland and completed in 1859, the Greek Revival Tennessee State Capitol building continues to serve as the governor's office and home of the Tennessee legislature. Its manicured grounds contain statues honoring prominent local figures like Sam Davis and Sergeant Alvin York and presidents Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson, and they also hold the tombs of President and Mrs. James K. Polk. Restored to its 19th-century appearance, several areas within the capitol itself display highly detailed murals and frescoes. It is located just south of Bicentennial Mall State Park in downtown Nashville; nearby, the Tennessee State Museum offers an intensive look into the state's tumultuous past.
